New Century Players 2016 - 2017 Season
New Century Players is happy to announce our productions for the 2016-2017 season. For the 2016-2017 season, New Century has taken a little of the old, a little of the new and a little of the borrowed and a little blue. We feel confident you will enjoy each and every one of our shows this season. We start with a newly created cabaret show by David Hastings and Kevin Yell called Stairway to Paradise which gives us a taste of the Birth of Broadway. This will be a celebration of the music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin – three composers who helped form what we now know as the Broadway musical. We will present the golden sounds of the musicals of the 1920’s and 30’s, performed in cabaret style in a new venue for NCP, the Rose Villa Performing Arts Center. Next we go to something “old” – but not that old. The response last season to our production of Glorious! was so tremendous (7 sold-out nights) that we decided to bring it back to allow more people a chance to see this gem. It was so much fun to produce and perform that it was an easy decision to bring it back. |

Stretching the metaphor a little, our something “borrowed” comes in the form of a tremendous local actress, Jane Fellows, who has prepared two one-woman plays The Belle of Amherst and First Lady Lou. We have arranged to have her perform these shows in repertory in the middle of our season. The Belle of Amherst is a play based on the life of Emily Dickinson which makes use of her work, diaries, and letters to recollect her encounters with the significant people in her life and showing her joys and her sorrows. First Lady Lou is a play written about first lady Lou Henry Hoover, wife of our 31st President. Through this show, we relive the whirlwind that is the early 20th century, as seen through the eyes of the witty, charming, compassionate and enormously capable Lou Henry Hoover.
Stretching the metaphor even further to encompass blue - the blue of the sky and sea. New Century Players will present Midsummer/Jersey, a high-octane re-telling of Shakespeare’s Midsummer’s Night Dream set on the boardwalk of a seaside town in modern New Jersey. This play is written by Ken Ludwig who also penned other wonderful comedies such as Lend Me a Tenor, Leading Ladies and Moon Over Buffalo.
We finish the season with another show “new” to NCP and perhaps to the audiences of the greater Portland/Milwaukie area. We will present a witty adaptation of Persuasion written by Jennifer LeBlanc based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. This is an insightful and heart-touching adaptation of love and loss in Regency England.
We look forward to seeing you at the shows this season!
